Madikwe is a "Big Five" game reserve situated 90 km north of Zeerust. Covering some 60 000 hectare, it is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. The rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game and the topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities.
Madikwe Safari Lodge offers simple yet sophisticated accommodation in
three exclusive safari camps which compromises of 16 suites.
Facilities
Each suite features a sitting area, a bedroom with circular fireplace, a spacious dressing area with personal bar, an en suite bathroom with bath, indoor and outdoor shower and a private plunge pool. The rooms are organic in design and woven copper screens add intriguing detail.
Overlooking Madikwe’s game-filled plains, intimate sitting areas in all three camps feature shaded outdoor seating on expansive covered decks. There are plentiful fireplaces both inside and outdoors with pizza ovens for fun dining, book-filled libraries and a unique safari shop. A covered outdoor living room offers beanbags and cushions on the floor for casual relaxation. The nearby boma is the setting for evocative starlit dinners.
The reintroduction of game began early in 1991, shortly before the perimeter fence had been completed. Operation Phoenix, as the reintroduction programme is called, is the largest game translocation exercise in the world. More than 8 000 animals of 28 species have so far been released into the reserve, including elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, cheetah, Cape hunting dog, spotted hyena, giraffe, zebra and many species of antelope and herbivores. Leopard already occurred in the reserve. Operation Phoenix was completed in 1997.
Guests at Madikwe Safari Lodge can view
some of Africa's most impressive wildlife on morning and afternoon/evening
game-drives. These are conducted in open game-viewing vehicles
led by professional and experienced rangers. You can also enjoy
excellent bird watching with over 350 bird species found in the area.
Book-filled libraries and interpretive centres are also available to
keep guests occupied.
